Seeing Jesus coming towards him, John said, ‘Look, there is the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. This is the one I spoke of when I said: A man is coming after me who ranks before me because he existed before me. I did not know him myself, and yet it was to reveal him to Israel that I came baptising with water.’ John also declared, ‘I saw the Spirit coming down on him from heaven like a dove and resting on him. I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, “The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is going to baptise with the Holy Spirit.” Yes, I have seen and I am the witness that he is the Chosen One of God.’

John the Baptist was the baby that leapt in Elizabeth’s womb at the presence of Mary and the Son of God within her womb (Luke 1:39-45). In today’s Gospel, both John and Jesus are grown men, and John recognizes that Jesus is the one for whom he has been sent to prepare the way.

We don’t know how often John and Jesus interacted over the years leading up to this meeting, but John’s Gospel would lead us to believe that they had not interacted much. Yet the same joy and excitement that John had in his mother’s womb is present in this moment: John sees Jesus and knows he is the one he has been waiting for with great expectation. He recognizes who Jesus is and knows immediately that great things are going to come from him.

To see so clearly comes to those with a deep prayer life and openness to God’s presence in their midst. John definitely had those things. The same joy and excitement that made John leap in the womb might have been the reassurance he needed as the adult forerunner of Jesus. Experiences like that are ones we seldom forget. Even when we are too young to recall all the details, those emotions stay with us.
May we be like John the Baptist, always open to allowing God’s joy and excitement to bless our lives. And may we, too, recognize God’s presence ever in our midst.

Closing Prayer

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
