The mother and brothers of Jesus arrived and, standing outside, sent in a message asking for him. A crowd was sitting round him at the time the message was passed to him, ‘Your mother and brothers and sisters are outside asking for you.’ He replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ And looking round at those sitting in a circle about him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers. Anyone who does the will of God, that person is my brother and sister and mother.’

Families are maddening.
We aren’t supposed to say this, are we? Family is such a powerful social, cultural, and religious force that it is even a dominant metaphor for church: the family of God. But family can be hard to understand, harder to love, even easier to leave sometimes.
Yet we cannot deny how we all come from families. Jesus knew the same. Today’s Gospel could be read as a welcome redefinition: beyond blood or biology, Jesus embraces as family everyone who listens to his word and does God’s will.
But as with every dynamic, more lies beneath. Earlier in Mark, Jesus’ relatives declared him “out of his mind,” and they “set out to seize him” (3:21). His mother and siblings are not waiting with open arms but arrive with alarm—for his safety and well-being (and their own as his kin).
Jesus does not reject his family but widens the circle to include the crowd. Families will misunderstand, worry, and wound each other. But as a school of humility, family also challenges us to become more: to rise above ourselves and learn to listen, serve, and love.
Family can demand the hardest work of our lives, but also the holiest.
Whenever Jesus’ question—Who is my family?—becomes our own, the answer is found as we look around. Here, too, are the ones God loves.
