Mark 1:29-39

On leaving the synagogue, Jesus went with James and John straight to the house of Simon and Andrew. Now Simon’s mother-in-law had gone to bed with fever, and they told him about her straightaway. He went to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began to wait on them.
That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed by devils. The whole town came crowding round the door, and he cured many who were suffering from diseases of one kind or another; he also cast out many devils, but he would not allow them to speak, because they knew who he was.
In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house, and went off to a lonely place and prayed there. Simon and his companions set out in search of him, and when they found him they said, ‘Everybody is looking for you.’ He answered, ‘Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns, so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came.’ And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out devils.

Things don’t always go my way. As a student, for example,
I sometimes felt I received a lower grade than I deserved.
Some of my employers have underpaid me. And there are
more intimate offenses that cut so much deeper. I have felt
alone, unable to defend myself, desperate for someone to help
me confront an invincible enemy. I have felt crushed by
injustice
and witnessed others suffer far worse. But no one
seemed to come. In those moments, I could have whispered
with Job, “I shall not see happiness again.”
In such darkness, can I bring myself to praise God? If God
has the power to stop any injustice, where is God when I am
treated unfairly? If God has the power to heal any illness,
where is God when I have a health crisis? It is easy to praise
God when I feel the power of divine intervention. It is hard
to praise God when he seems altogether absent.
I know I must not withhold my love from God simply
because I feel my prayers are not answered. If my children
only loved me when they got their way, I wouldn’t call it love.
It is not for me to question God for the blessings I have not
received. I must instead praise and thank God for the many
blessings bestowed upon me.
Whatever injustices I may suffer, Jesus knows them. He
suffered ridicule, betrayal, and death. Jesus is with me in my
anguish, and I can share my suffering with him. When I keep
it to myself, I make it worse. May God grant me the grace to
praise the Lord, who is always with me, and allow him to heal
my broken heart.<br.

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.
