Jesus said to his disciples: “I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.
“You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, Raqa, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna. Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court. Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.” The Gospel of the Lord.

Several years ago, I was pondering a fall from grace in my past and was fretting about it. I turned to God in prayer and asked, “You remember that THING I did back then?” God’s response was, “What THING?” And I replied, “You know . . . that THING! Of course you remember. You’re God.” And God said, “Ummm, actually I don’t remember. You see, as soon as you ask for forgiveness, I forget it. So, no, I don’t remember.”
This experience came to mind as I reflected on the promises in today’s reading from Ezekiel. His prophecy reveals such a compassionate side of God, who is so much freer and more flexible than we humans are. There is no malice in God. We may stew over injuries or mistakes, but God’s energy is not spent there. God clears the slate.
Could we possibly believe in such benevolence, especially if we do not see it modeled in the human community? God does not perseverate over our failings and fallings. God wants only the good and recognizes it when it is chosen. How lucky are we?! God’s memory is long, but only for the good and for the Love to which we come running back. As a vulnerable human being, I wish my memory and that of others was calibrated like that. Lent is a good time to recalibrate our efforts.
Breathe a huge sigh of relief. We are saved. We are healed. We are forgiven. Aren’t they all maybe the same thing? Love looks like this.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
