John 7:1-2,10,25-30

Jesus stayed in Galilee; he could not stay in Judaea, because the Jews were out to kill him.
As the Jewish feast of Tabernacles drew near, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, but quite privately, without drawing attention to himself. Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, ‘Isn’t this the man they want to kill? And here he is, speaking freely, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authorities have made up their minds that he is the Christ? Yet we all know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one will know where he comes from.’
Then, as Jesus taught in the Temple, he cried out:
‘Yes, you know me
and you know where I came from.
Yet I have not come of myself:
no, there is one who sent me
and I really come from him,
and you do not know him,
but I know him because I have come from him
and it was he who sent me.’
They would have arrested him then, but because his time had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.

Before Jesus was born, “the wicked” were already on the defensive, complaining about one who would come and make life difficult. In our first reading, they were planning to torture the just one, saying that God could defend his own. How their wickedness blinded them—if they only knew who was on the way.
The Gospel brings us to a time when Jesus was the target. Despite being aware of the threats against him, Jesus was clear about who he was and where he was from. However, it was not time for him face the cross.
My first inclination is to think of the evildoers around me who are ready to trample Jesus’ words with their actions. We can all identify those around us, whether they are close or in the public sphere, who we believe go against God. How easy it is to look outward at “the others” who are the problem.
Somehow, I find myself drawn inward into the shadowy chambers of my own heart, where I suffer from my own forms of blindness. While I have always experienced these readings as being about those around me, today I can’t help but look within. Even though I know Jesus, I have my own daily challenges, especially during this Lent. Today I can only pray to open my own eyes, my own ears, and my own heart to this One who is here to save us all.

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
