John 7:40-52

Several people who had been listening to Jesus said, ‘Surely he must be the prophet’, and some said, ‘He is the Christ’, but others said, ‘Would the Christ be from Galilee? Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from the town of Bethlehem?’ So the people could not agree about him. Some would have liked to arrest him, but no one actually laid hands on him.
The police went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, ‘Why haven’t you brought him?’ The police replied, ‘There has never been anybody who has spoken like him.’ ‘So’ the Pharisees answered ‘you have been led astray as well? Have any of the authorities believed in him? Any of the Pharisees? This rabble knows nothing about the Law – they are damned.’ One of them, Nicodemus – the same man who had come to Jesus earlier – said to them, ‘But surely the Law does not allow us to pass judgement on a man without giving him a hearing and discovering what he is about?’ To this they answered, ‘Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets do not come out of Galilee.’

O Lord, my God, in you I take refuge.
God is the exquisite likeness
of a mother with child.
God bore me in his womb
and loved me and destined me
and already thought of my days
and of my death.

What will happen to me doesn’t matter to me;
God already knows it.
Let us not be afraid, brothers and sisters.
We are living through difficult and uncertain days.*

We do not know if this very evening
we will be prisoners
or murder victims.

We do not know
what the forces of evil will do with us.
But one thing I do know . . .
even those who are mourned . . .
are known and loved by God. . . .
He loves us,
he keeps on loving.
He loves our history too, and he knows
where the ways of our land’s redemption will lead.

We do not lose hope in this great truth.
This is the true treasure of God’s reign:
hope, faith, prayer,
the intimate force that joins one to God.

Let us pray for this.

St. Oscar Romero, The Violence of Love

Oscar Romero (1917–1980) became archbishop of San Salvador in 1977. A prophetic voice of the poor, he was martyred at the altar while saying Mass. Romero was canonized in 2018.

* During El Salvador’s brutal civil war, Romero condemned the atrocities committed against thousands of innocent victims.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
