40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'

41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?

42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, the village where David was?'

43 So the people could not agree about him.

44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actually laid a hand on him.

45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you brought him?'

46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'

47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?

48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?

49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'

50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,

51 'But surely our Law does not allow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearing and discovering what he is doing?'

52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets do not arise in Galilee.'

53 They all went home.

Christ in All Manner of Places.

This is the Christ.

You, like Christ, must incarnate yourself in utter simplicity, humility, and seeming weakness—into the streams of the day-by-day life of people who live in the world, in its marketplaces, its pleasure places, its slums and its palaces, its studying places, its holy places, and its sinful places.

There you must begin to witness to the incarnation. To Christ. There you must begin to enact in your own person, or should I say re-enact, Bethlehem and Nazareth.

What does it matter if you are inadequate in your own estimation? What does it matter that you think you are not contributing much to the church? What does it matter if you think you are a sinner? Take it for granted. You are. So am I. So are we all. But don’t bother about it. Do not impede his grace in your soul by dwelling on your poverty. We are all paupers of this kind . . . all sinners.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
