Filled with awe and great joy the women came quickly away from the tomb and ran to tell the disciples.
And there, coming to meet them, was Jesus. ‘Greetings’ he said. And the women came up to him and, falling down before him, clasped his feet. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers that they must leave for Galilee; they will see me there.’
While they were on their way, some of the guard went off into the city to tell the chief priests all that had happened. These held a meeting with the elders and, after some discussion, handed a considerable sum of money to the soldiers with these instructions, ‘This is what you must say, “His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.” And should the governor come to hear of this, we undertake to put things right with him ourselves and to see that you do not get into trouble.’ The soldiers took the money and carried out their instructions, and to this day that is the story among the Jews.

What joy as the two Marys rush from the tomb! And yet, at this moment they haven’t a clue about what will come. It’s all so unimaginable: the risen Jesus passing through locked doors, his Ascension, Pentecost, the persecution of the young Church. Even amid trials, joy will endure, born of the Paschal mystery. But for now, the women know none of this. How could they?

I think of my own journey in religious life, begun eight years ago. Looking back, I see how little I knew of what would
come—how very little! Anyone who’s made an important commitment—marriage, parenthood, studies, career—could say the same. With the Marys, we cannot see what lies ahead, but we follow a call that urges us on. In the verses preceding today’s Gospel, Matthew tells of an earthquake, an angel, and an empty tomb (28:1-7). Small wonder that the women are fearful. Yet sometimes, we don’t even know enough to be afraid. Our own view is limited—so limited that we cannot fathom what lies ahead. (Little did I know when I took my vows that a pandemic was around the corner!)

When Jesus meets the women, he speaks blessed assurance: “Do not be afraid.” Yes, I really am alive! He also repeats the instruction given by the angel: “Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” Yes, I affirm your mission to announce the Good News.

On this Easter Monday, maybe we’re doubting our own call to mission: Can I really keep doing this? Perhaps we’re sorting out some unforeseen challenge: Who knew this would happen? If only Jesus would come and stand before us! But as we listen with the ear of our hearts, we hear his blessed assurance: “Do not be afraid.” Alleluia!
