8 Filled with awe and great joy the women came quickly away from the tomb and ran to tell his disciples.

9 And suddenly, coming to meet them, was Jesus. 'Greetings,' he said. And the women came up to him and, clasping his feet, they did him homage.

10 Then Jesus said to them, 'Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers that they must leave for Galilee; there they will see me.'

11 Now while they were on their way, some of the guards went off into the city to tell the chief priests all that had happened.

12 These held a meeting with the elders and, after some discussion, handed a considerable sum of money to the soldiers

13 with these instructions, 'This is what you must say, "His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep."

14 And should the governor come to hear of this, we undertake to put things right with him ourselves and to see that you do not get into trouble.'

15 So they took the money and carried out their instructions, and to this day that is the story among the Jews.

Energized by the Resurrection.

If you go to the great basilica in Assisi, Italy, you will find the bones of St. Francis. If you go to the cathedral in Durham, England, behind the high altar you will find the bones of St. Cuthbert. But if you go to Jerusalem, under the great rotunda of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, you find only an empty tomb. That’s why the women in today’s Gospel are overcome with a mixture of fear and joy: They see the empty tomb—they encounter an angel sitting on the large stone as if on a throne. “Do not be afraid—go and tell the disciples— he is risen!” Fear and joy.

It is this core experience of the empty tomb and the personal encounter with the Risen Lord that gives rise to Easter faith, faith in the Risen Christ. Still, we doubt. How can we know that Christ is truly Risen? It’s the same question Paul encountered within the Corinthian community (1 Cor 15). We know Christ is risen, St. Paul says, because we share in the fruits and the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 12; Gal 5:22-23). The Spirit is the sign par excellence of the resurrection.

Our belief in the possibility of genuine human transformation is rooted in the resurrection of Christ. This change is not superficial, like a new ’do or shirt. It is deep change, coming from the inside out, energized and guided by the resurrection of Christ.

So some questions: What do I want to do that is totally new for me because Christ is Risen and I share in that resurrection? What do we as a community want to do that is totally new because Christ is Risen and we share in that resurrection?
