Jesus said to Nicodemus:
‘God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost
but may have eternal life.
For God sent his Son into the world
not to condemn the world,
but so that through him the world might be saved.
No one who believes in him will be condemned;
but whoever refuses to believe is condemned already,
because he has refused to believe in the name of God’s only Son.
On these grounds is sentence pronounced:
that though the light has come into the world
men have shown they prefer darkness to the light
because their deeds were evil.
And indeed, everybody who does wrong
hates the light and avoids it,
for fear his actions should be exposed;
but the man who lives by the truth comes out into the light,
so that it may be plainly seen that what he does is done in God.’

The light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light.

Why, we might ask, would anyone be so foolish as to choose the darkness, and therefore death, rather than the light and life? It is because choosing the light, in John’s Gospel, means accepting the responsibility that comes from this choice, namely, to live unselfishly—something that will bring the pain of self-denial as well as the joy of ultimate freedom.

All prayers of trust in God’s goodness, in spite of experiences that seem to contradict that goodness, are based on our discovery of the truth about God, which Jesus came to reveal to us.

God loves us so passionately that only his Son’s death for our sake could adequately express that love. It is our response to this truth about God’s love that will bring us ultimate freedom: “If you remain in my word” (if you embrace all the implications of my love for you), “you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32).

With the gift of freedom, however, comes also the obligation to use freedom as we see God using it, namely, to love others so that they too may be free. It also means the ability to choose to trust God’s goodness, no matter how badly we may feel that we are being treated.

When Jesus tells us that he is “the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6), he is not telling us that it is an easy way but that his way of unselfish love is the only way that leads to life and happiness and peace.

Closing Prayer

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
