52 Then the Jews started arguing among themselves, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'

53 Jesus replied to them: In all truth I tell you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.

54 Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shall raise that person up on the last day.

55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.

56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in that person.

57 As the living Father sent me and I draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will also draw life from me.

58 This is the bread which has come down from heaven; it is not like the bread our ancestors ate: they are dead, but anyone who eats this bread will live for ever.

Amid Such Bias.

It shouldn’t surprise us that Saul, a man with obsessive ire toward Jesus and his followers, failed to recognize the Risen Christ who stood before him. In our time, examples of blind hatred are common. Newsstands abound with tragic reports of upright women and men who are miscast as criminals only because of the color of their skin. And many of us extend our fury about the actions of a few religious extremists to all Muslim people. We see the peaceful followers of Islam only as terrorists.

Such instances evince the sin of bias, which, in the words of theologian M. Shawn Copeland, “hides the ‘other’ from me and renders the ‘other’ invisible.” Amid such bias, I—like Saul—see only my perverted projection of the “other” instead of a human person of divinely ordained dignity and inherent goodness.

The parallel story of Ananias reminds us that the sin of bias is not exclusive to the violent zealot who attacks the “other” before him. Even the private discrimination of this holy man is unjustifiable before God.

Today’s Scripture offers hope for regaining our vision, but this process requires something of us. Before the “scales fell from his eyes,” Saul had vulnerable encounters with the very people he hated. Ananias confessed his bias and willfully encountered the person he feared. If we wish to see with the eyes of faith, we must follow their examples.
