From the Other Side of Easter,

I wonder what the Jews of Antioch were thinking as Paul preached in their synagogue and invited them to acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah. Paul argues that Jesus has fulfilled all the prophecies and promises of God found in Scripture. God promised to save them from their enemies and give them their own land. Yet many false messiahs had come and gone, dashing hopes for an anointed king to reunite the people. What made this man any different?

In the Gospel, Jesus invites his own disciples to have faith in him. As he prepares for his departure, he comforts them, promising a safe place where they can be together with him. From the other side of Easter, we know that Jesus is no ordinary Messiah, and he is not talking about retaking Jerusalem for the people of Israel. His promises get fulfilled differently than one might expect. His disciples are confused.

As we look forward to the feast of the Ascension, today’s readings invite us to attend to our own spiritual desires with hope and trust. God has fulfilled so many promises to us, loving us, protecting us, making room for us. In a world awash with false messiahs, we are challenged to recognize the real thing. The resurrected Christ often looks like other people. Can we trust Jesus even through confusion? Hope waits with belief, with confidence in God’s love and care for us. Can we
still feel the possibility of now, the fulfillment of God’s promises in our presence? Miracles? With Jesus, anything is possible.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
