27 Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I give you, a peace which the world cannot give, this is my gift to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.

28 You heard me say: I am going away and shall return. If you loved me you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.

29 I have told you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe.

30 I shall not talk to you much longer, because the prince of this world is on his way. He has no power over me,

31 but the world must recognise that I love the Father and that I act just as the Father commanded. Come now, let us go.

Love in the Face of Loss.

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you . . .” Words of encouragement in the face of an ugly death. Words of love and guidance in the face of the greatest loss the world has ever experienced. These words are for us too, each one of us: words of love and encouragement in the face of our loss, in the face of our death.

For if there is anything that is certain for those who love generously, it is the reality of the losses we suffer in our lives . . . the subtle and invisible ones, the blunt and the slow ones: like losing a job, or not being able to find one; or losing a driver’s licence because of ill health or old age; or losing our innocence, our hope, our self-confidence.

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you . . .” In the face of the losses that are part of our living, what do these words mean? In the face of Jesus’ crucifixion and death, what is this peace that the world cannot give?

The disciples did not fully take to heart Jesus’ farewell speech until they were faced with the challenge to proclaim the Good News of Jesus’ resurrection. Once their hearts were filled with that Spirit of peace and understanding, the disciples were even able to deal with crises and dissent in their own ranks.

Once they were filled with the Spirit, they had a foretaste of the new world to come. Once we are filled with the Spirit, we become bearers of God’s love and light even in the darkest places.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
