1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.

2 Every branch in me that bears no fruit he cuts away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes to make it bear even more.

3 You are clean already, by means of the word that I have spoken to you.

4 Remain in me, as I in you. As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself, unless it remains part of the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.

5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, with me in him, bears fruit in plenty; for cut off from me you can do nothing.

6 Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a branch -- and withers; these branches are collected and thrown on the fire and are burnt.

7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for whatever you please and you will get it.

8 It is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit and be my disciples.

The Grace to Engage.

Last September, after Hurricane Harvey, I was in Houston, Texas, to help clean out my parents’ flooded home. The arduous work was made less daunting through the help of several neighbors, teams from nearby churches, and random strangers offering assistance. In response to disaster, most of our differences fade away, and we come together as a community to help those who need us.

That sense of communal unity is seemingly at risk in today’s story of Paul and Barnabas and their dispute with other Church leaders over whether Gentile converts must be circumcised. In some of our own parishes, the newly baptized are learning in this Easter season what it means to be joined to the True Vine. It is probably already clear to them that the powerful oneness I experienced in Houston is a clear marker of Christian community.

What may be less clear is that conflict is also part of Christian life. As the flood waters receded, the debris was hauled away, and the homes were restored, the people of Houston returned to “normal” life, which includes disputes with neighbors, political differences, racial prejudices, and religious divisions. The Christians there and everywhere are not free of these tendencies toward separation.

What marks the Christian community is the grace to engage in our disputes with a Spirit-filled love of those we disagree with. As we step forward with the neophytes to drink of the fruit of the True Vine, will they witness in us a profound love of neighbor that includes those who are hard to love?

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
