In the Passing of the Years.

“Happy Birthday!”
This is the greeting we use to honor someone’s calendar date-of-birth.

I prefer the Italian: Buon compleanno! It literally means: Happy Completion of Another Year! This greeting seems more accurate than “Happy Birthday.” And it is certainly more poignant: “You have just completed another year of your life” implies that you are one year closer to death. Congratulations!

Each year, these great 50 Days of Easter also celebrate the passing of time. The Paschal Candle, like any candle, burns as a witness to this passing. We bless it at the Great Vigil and mark it with the digits of the calendar year, 2-0-1-8, in the name of Christ: “All time belongs to him, and all the ages!” In other words, Eastertime is a kind of prolonged birthday celebration, a 50-day afterglow of that night when neophytes are born, the community is renewed, and the promise of abundant life in resurrection is offered again. All as we move closer to death. Alleluia!

So, on this 34th Day of Easter, the proclamation of good news to the Gentiles is decided by the Holy Spirit. To the apostles, Christ announces that we are divinely chosen in love. All is done by God’s initiative and providence, so we might be freed from slavery to the fear of death and be transformed in the passing of the years into the eternity of love incarnate.

All Loving God

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.
