Few Words, Many Meanings.

Jesus taught in parables. We all know that. Do we ever stop to ask the significance of this method of communication? Figures of speech do not state their message baldly but express it in a way that is open to multiple meanings. Stories, images, and symbols do more than simply inject factual information into our heads. They ask us to ponder the matter, to chew it over, to ruminate on the basis of our own experience of life. To spend time with the image and allow ourselves to pause in wonder.

Some prefer that Jesus would have spoken in plain language. Would have defined truth with legal definitions and logical explanations. Would have enunciated an exhaustive black-and-white morality that laid down the law unambiguously and definitively. Yet Jesus taught in parables, encouraging us to think matters through from our own standpoint, letting his words leaven our thoughts so that they may rise to a higher plane. Allowing his Spirit to lead us to a new embodiment of truth that is capable of evangelizing both us and the little world in which we live.

Jesus spoke in parables out of respect for his listeners. He left it to the Pharisees to lay down the law. He preferred rather to initiate a process of reflection that would allow his disciples to arrive at the fullness of truth not by marching along a highway but by following a meandering path that was more expressive of the complexity of individual lives. Direct apprehension of the whole and perfectly pure prayer are for eternity. For now, prayer comes marked by the untidiness of daily life, but yet is confident of its acceptability in the Father’s eyes.

All Loving God

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
