20 I pray not only for these but also for those who through their teaching will come to believe in me.

21 May they all be one, just as, Father, you are in me and I am in you, so that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe it was you who sent me.

22 I have given them the glory you gave to me, that they may be one as we are one.

23 With me in them and you in me, may they be so perfected in unity that the world will recognise that it was you who sent me and that you have loved them as you have loved me.

24 Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, so that they may always see my glory which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.

25 Father, Upright One, the world has not known you, but I have known you, and these have known that you have sent me.

26 I have made your name known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and so that I may be in them.

Communion Is Work.

Luke’s skill as a storyteller comes through both in his Gospel and in the Acts of the Apostles. It is certainly evident in today’s scene presenting Paul before the Sanhedrin. One might suspect Luke enjoyed writing up this demonstration of Paul’s ability to move attention off himself by way of tossing up a verbal volleyball—the belief in bodily resurrection—which he knew the Sadducees and Pharisees strongly disagreed on. Bedlam ensues. And then, knowing that Sadducees also didn’t believe in angels, Luke gives us a Pharisee declaring Paul innocent and proposing that “an angel might have spoken to him.” More bedlam. Paul is whisked off to safety so he will not be “torn to pieces.” But, lest we think this is all Paul’s doing, Jesus appears the next night to say that the coming change of venue is all part of God’s plan for Paul’s ongoing witness to the risen Lord. “Take courage,” Jesus says, “your work is not done yet.”

At the Last Supper, Jesus prays for those who will believe in him through the witness of the apostles. That’s us. So we too can take courage. God’s will is that we may “all be one” just as Jesus and the Father are one. God’s work is communion, that the love that unites Jesus with the Father, will unite all God’s children. And this is our ongoing work, made possible through Christ’s presence in and with us. “Take courage” indeed!
