John 21: 20-25.

20 Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them -- the one who had leant back close to his chest at the supper and had said to him, 'Lord, who is it that will betray you?'

21 Seeing him, Peter said to Jesus, 'What about him, Lord?'

22 Jesus answered, 'If I want him to stay behind till I come, what does it matter to you? You are to follow me.'

23 The rumour then went out among the brothers that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus had not said to Peter, 'He will not die,' but, 'If I want him to stay behind till I come.'

24 This disciple is the one who vouches for these things and has written them down, and we know that his testimony is true.

25 There was much else that Jesus did; if it were written down in detail, I do not suppose the world itself would hold all the books that would be written.

Where to Begin?

Who doesn’t want to be “the disciple whom Jesus loves”? We don’t know for sure which disciple the Gospel of John describes in this way. Tradition has it that it was John himself. Recent scholars have suggested it was Lazarus: when his sisters sent word asking Jesus to come, they said, “he whom you love is ill” (John 11:3). When Jesus arrived and began to weep, onlookers said, “See how he loved him!” (John 11:36). Others have argued that James or Mary Magdalene was the Beloved Disciple.

Does it matter? I don’t really care about the identity of the disciple Jesus loved then, as long as it’s me now. And you.

So what can we learn from this intimate friendship with Jesus that might help us cultivate such closeness with him ourselves? The Beloved Disciple is mentioned six times in John’s Gospel: reclining by Jesus at the Last Supper; standing with the Blessed Mother at the crucifixion; outrunning Peter to the empty tomb; recognizing the risen Jesus on the lakeshore after the miraculous catch of fish; referred to by Peter in the same scene when he asks Jesus “What about this man?”; and finally, asserting in the last verses of the Gospel that his testimony of the events is true.

In every case, the Beloved Disciple is there, right at Jesus’ side no matter what else is happening. And this disciple is loyal, insisting that this picture of the Word made flesh is true. If we want to be close to the heart of Jesus, these are two good places to begin.
