The descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost traditionally marks the birth of the Church. But it’s hardly the first time the Spirit shows up.

In the book of Genesis, the Spirit (ru’ah) hovers over the waters at the moment of creation (Gen 1:2). The psalms sing of God’s Spirit renewing the face of the earth (Ps 104:30). Jesus’ whole life is carried along by the Spirit. From the moment of his conception (“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,” Luke 1:35) to his first words as a teacher (“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,” Luke 4:18) to his final promise (“Receive the Holy Spirit,” John 20:22)—the Spirit serves not only as the bond of love between the Son and the Father but also as the living link between Christ and his people.

The Holy Spirit is nothing other than God alive and active in the world. If Jesus is how God burst forth into human history, then the Spirit is how God continues to burn in the human heart. The Spirit is God’s love for each one of us. It is God’s loving presence within me.

The beauty of God’s gift is that it comes to us as we are. When the apostles shared the gift of the Spirit, the people who listened did not need to learn a new language. Instead they confessed, “we heard them speaking in our own tongues the mighty acts of God” (Acts 2:11). The one Spirit does not obliterate the amazing diversity of the Body of Christ, but rather makes possible the marvelous contribution of each and every part to the life of the whole.
