46 They came to Jericho, and as Jesus was leaving with his disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus son of Timaeus was sitting by the road. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus! Son of David! Take pity on me!”
48 Many of the people scolded him and told him to be quiet. But he shouted even more loudly, “Son of David, take pity on me!”
49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”
So they called the blind man. “Cheer up!” they said. “Get up, he is calling you.”

50 He threw off his cloak, jumped up, and came to Jesus.
51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.
“Teacher,” the blind man answered, “I want to see again.”

52 “Go,” Jesus told him, “your faith has made you well.”
At once he was able to see and followed Jesus on the road.

A Transforming Tenderness.

The Lord is gracious and merciful.

I think it is much harder to forgive God for our sins—for letting us remain weak and short-sighted and short-tempered— than to ask God’s forgiveness for them.

But compunction, an abiding sense of contrition, lets in a healing love which does not just erase sin but transforms it into glorious other things. It becomes first of all the occasion of the piercing of our shell, then realization of our true need of God. It grows into wisdom, understanding, self-knowledge, compassion, maturity.

To refuse to accept ourselves as the person who has sinned and to refuse God’s forgiveness of us is to keep putting plaster on the broken areas of our wall. It’s refusing to accept the wonderful transforming power of God’s love. Those who have hard things to remember should always remember them wrapped tightly in God’s transforming tenderness. They are, translucent with contrition and with grace, glorious holy places where God meets us in intimate gift.

A very nice little prayer method, which kind of sums up the heart of our Christian effort is this: Sit with your hands tightly knotted into fists and laid on your lap. Very slowly and gently, open one finger at a time, starting with one hand, then passing to the next. Leave your fingers loose and relaxed not stiffly out straight. Recall just one concrete incident of the day in which you failed, and open it gently to the healing power of God.
