Mark 4:26-34

Jesus said to the crowds: “This is how it is with the kingdom
of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the
land and would sleep and rise night and day and through it
all the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of
its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the
ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the grain is
ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come.”
He said, “To what shall we compare the kingdom of God,
or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed
that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the
seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and
becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches,
so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade.” With
many such parables he spoke the word to them as they
were able to understand it. Without parables he did not
speak to them, but to his own disciples he explained everything
in private.

I remember the day vividly. My husband meandered down
the beach, taking pictures while I remained on the shore
reveling in the sensations of sun and sea. I had visited the
same spot on previous trips to Southern California but, at
that moment, I was aware that I might never return there
again. There is a last time for everything, I thought. Then a
seal zipped across a breaking wave . . . Enjoy it this time!
“It is good to give thanks to the Lord,” the psalmist writes.
There may be no greater way to cultivate a rich spiritual life
than the practice of gratitude. It keeps us from becoming
jaded, entitled, or cynical. Like the farmer in today’s parable,
we wake in wonder at kernels growing into sheltering trees.
We find grace in scattered efforts that sow seeds of peace,
kindness, and compassion. Gratitude creates a space within
us in which to receive and celebrate life as a gift to be savored
here and now. After all, this time, this experience, this moment
will not come again. A last time for everything makes each
moment an opportunity for surprise—a necessary ingredient
for deep gratefulness. A flower sprouting through a crack in
the cement, the laughter of a child, the wonder of a sneeze.
The possibilities for surprise are endless. By remaining receptive,
we greet the dawn with expectancy and rest at night in
the knowledge of God’s kindness, which knows no bounds.

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.
