“This is how you are to pray: / ‘Our Father who art in heaven, / hallowed be thy name, / thy Kingdom come, / thy will be done, / on earth as it is in heaven. / Give us this day our daily bread; / and forgive us our trespasses, / as we forgive those who trespass against us; / and lead us not into temptation, / but deliver us from evil.’
“If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.”

What a strange reading from Sirach today! Line after line praises Elijah with a few lines at the end extolling Elisha. Two points can help us understand. First, this is part of a long section (chs. 44–50) that begins, “I will now praise the godly, our ancestors, in their own time” (44:1). Second, notice the references to the Lord in this passage: “By the Lord’s word” and “by the will of the Lord.”
Sirach praises these prophets precisely insofar as they lived according to God’s will and proclaimed God’s Word. That’s how we all can become godly people, holy people.
Jesus teaches us a similar message in giving us the Lord’s Prayer. The petitions of this prayer are not a long list of things we want for ourselves. They focus more on what we pray for God: “Hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done.” We are praying that God’s concerns become our own. Even when we ask for daily bread and forgiveness, we are praying for the grace to imitate Jesus, who depended on the Father for everything and forgave everyone, even from the cross.
Holiness means being like God, and this prayer teaches us how to do that. Our first and primary prayer should always be to embrace the will of God in our lives. As Jesus prayed during his agony in the garden, “Not as I will, but as you will.” If we make that prayer the goal of our lives, we might all be praised as godly men and women.
