Jesus said to his disciples: “No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. If God so clothes the grass of the field, which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith? So do not worry and say, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear?’ All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.”

Harold Skimpole, a character in Charles Dickens’ Bleak House, claims to live for the day: “I only ask to be free. Butterflies are free. Mankind will surely not deny to Harold Skimpole what it concedes to the butterflies.” Is this obedience to Jesus’ command that we not worry about tomorrow? But his childishness hides a selfish flight from responsibility. Where would we be if we never saved for our pensions or thought about our children or recklessly gobbled up our small planet?
Jesus is inviting us to live now in the light of our ultimate future. “Seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides.” Instead of just tomorrow, Jesus asks us to seek the final goal of our lives, the triumph of divine love.
You cannot “serve God and mammon” because, among much else, money turns our mind to short-term profit and so blinds us to the final goal of our lives. Politicians who live just for the next election or businesspeople who see everything in the light of this financial year’s balance sheet live neither for today nor for our promised future! If we seek the Kingdom, we shall indeed live today, hear today the cry of our suffering neighbor, grasp this moment, the only one which exists, to rejoice, love, and live. We shall be open to the eternity of God’s today, and be secure in God’s unfailing providence.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
