Matthew 16:13-23

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

God always makes the first move. God is love, and love forgives, draws near, invites. Today’s readings spotlight this blessed reality. Jeremiah prophesies that God will forgive a sinful people, calling them into a new covenant of love. In the Gospel, Jesus affirms that God has drawn near to Peter, revealing to him what flesh and blood could not.
God’s first move is pure gift—grace. Fittingly, today we celebrate a saint known as the “Preacher of Grace”: Dominic de Guzmán. In the thirteenth century, Dominic founded a mendicant order of preachers who would proclaim the Good News, dispelling heresy and healing division. Long before, Jeremiah had announced God’s intent for all, “from least to greatest,” to know God. Perhaps this divine dream, born of love for God’s own people, was the seed for Dominic’s dream for the Order of Preachers.
God loves, God dreams, God makes the first move. Obstacles do come, especially when we—like Peter—choose human wisdom instead of God’s. But love doesn’t just have the first word; it has the last word, too! Satan meddles, as he did with Peter—yet love prevails.
Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah.
Blessed are you, Dominic de Guzmán.
Blessed are we, for we are loved.
And now it’s our move . . . What will we do for the sake of love?

All Loving God

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
