Jesus said to his disciples: “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell the Church. If he refuses to listen even to the Church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

[Today’s] Gospel stresses the presence of God in the community, in believers: “where two or three are gathered in my name, / there am I in the midst of them” (Matt 18:20). The picture of the presence of the Lord leaving the Temple on a vehicle of cherubim, wings, and wheels is memorable. . . . Yhwh is abandoning his people to their punishment. While it may be dramatic and picturesque, we are better off reminding ourselves that [this] is a picture and that the reality in our case may be different. Does God really ever leave us? (see 2 Tim 2:13). Isn’t it [rather] that we abandon, desert, ignore, forget God? The responsibility is ours. We make real the presence of God in our midst, in our lives, by our willingness to live in peace and work for peace with others. Possibly it’s better to think that by our indifference, coldness, and lack of attention, we are effectively walking out the door and abandoning the true center of our being where God dwells.
. . . [W]e are often limited by spatial images. God is present everywhere, especially, as the last words of the Gospel tell us, in our fellow human beings gathered in God’s name. Yet the reality is that we can live oblivious of that, absorbed
in the trinkets and trivia of our world, undervaluing the truly human and divine elements in our midst. God is here, in these people, but we look elsewhere.
