Some Pharisees approached Jesus, and tested him, saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?” He said in reply, “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator made them male and female and said, For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, man must not separate.” They said to him, “Then why did Moses command that the man give the woman a bill of divorce and dismiss her?” He said to them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery.” His disciples said to him, “If that is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” He answered, “Not all can accept this word, but only those to whom that is granted. Some are incapable of marriage because they were born so; some, because they were made so by others; some, because they have renounced marriage for the sake of the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever can accept this ought to accept it.”

The teachings of Jesus can be challenging, thought-provoking, even idealistic. His preaching was more than simply “love one another,” or “consider the lilies.” He also taught about societal conventions, including marriage and divorce. Though Jesus had a simple and straightforward prohibition on divorce, within a generation or two the early Church already modified that teaching slightly, as reflected in today’s Gospel. Matthew, who wrote about fifty years after the time of Jesus and who used Mark’s Gospel as a source, adds a parenthetical phrase—“unless the marriage is unlawful”—to the otherwise total prohibition on divorce. This is not the only New Testament text to employ such a modification.
Paul, too, in his letter to the Corinthians refers to the Lord’s prohibition on divorce and then adds his own advice. Paul says that “if an unbeliever separates, then let them separate. The brother or sister is not bound in such cases. God has called you to peace” (1 Cor 7:15). Even today, the Catholic Church refers to this as the “Pauline Privilege,” which allows a dissolution of the marriage if the two were not baptized at the time they were married.
As this brief Gospel passage shows, some of the teachings of Jesus were so ideal that even the early Church modified
them, if only slightly. We, like the early Church, recognize that sometimes reality itself may impinge on the ideal, and exceptions will be made. And still, we strive to live the ideals of Jesus.
