A young man approached Jesus and said, “Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?” He answered him, “Why do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He asked him, “Which ones?” And Jesus replied, “You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother; and you shall love your neighbor as yourself. ” The young man said to him, “All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

I am fond of saying that Jesus never turned anybody away, but there are two ways that people can be excluded from having a relationship with Jesus. The first is when his own disciples get in the way of someone else coming to the Lord. We see that when the disciples seek to prevent children, the pressing crowds, and others from approaching Jesus. The other instance is when individuals remove themselves from embracing Jesus or simply walk away. Such is the case with the wealthy young man in today’s Gospel.
The young man seems to be incredibly self-confident and convinced of his own righteousness. He approaches Jesus in a style that I like to imagine as seeking affirmation for what he thinks is a slam-dunk. Believing that he’s already met the standard for what God is asking of him, he is shocked when Jesus asks still more of him. Disappointed that he didn’t receive a pat on the back, but instead a call to deeper commitment and action, he walks away forlorn.
If we choose not to walk away from Jesus, then this story invites us to reflect on how sure we are that we are good with God. Is there more we can do? Can we be better followers of
Jesus? What is God calling us to embrace in mind, heart, and action to deepen our commitment to Christ?

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy.
