Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and the elders of the people in parables saying, “The Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. A second time he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those invited: “Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast.” ’ Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then the king said to his servants, ‘The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.’ The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to meet the guests he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment. He said to him, ‘My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?’ But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’ Many are invited, but few are chosen.”

Salve Regina, mater misericordiae. . . . Known also as “Hail, Holy Queen,” this prayer is sung or prayed at the conclusion of Compline through much of the year and is the final prayer of the rosary. Chanted at the bedside of the dying, it is also sung at the conclusion of funerals of priests and religious, where it never fails to move me. Not some ancient chant that needs to be dusted off from time to time, this hymn speaks to the hearts of people of all times.
As a child I remember wearing a medal—depicting just the head of Mary—pinned with a tiny blue bow to my school uniform. It likely represented my mother’s prayer that Mary would sustain me by her constant intercession. Pope Pius XII instituted today’s liturgical feast as a climax to the 1954 Marian Year. His encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam does not proclaim a new truth, but reinforces Mary’s queenly dignity. Originally celebrated on May 31, the feast was later moved to August 22, the octave day of the Assumption.
Pius XII concluded his encyclical by explaining that the feast was being instituted “so that all may recognize more clearly and venerate more devoutly the merciful and maternal sway of the Mother of God. We are convinced that this feast will help to preserve, strengthen, and prolong that peace among nations which daily is almost destroyed by recurring crises.” I can think of no greater need in our world today.

does not limit the experience of God to moments of prayer or “sacred”
places. We can experience God’s love in all of our life. From this viewpoint,
the world is no longer considered an obstacle and becomes instead a place
of encounter with God, of mission and of sanctification.

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy.
Hail, our life, our sweetness,
and our hope.
