When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

Today, we often see the heart as a symbol for the emotional side of one’s life. We think of our feelings. In the Bible, the heart is more than that. It symbolizes the center of one’s being. It signifies emotions, intelligence, decision-making, and the will. That’s what we need to bring to the Lord: our center, our whole selves.
I heard a story once: An old pilgrim was making his way to a shrine high in the Himalayas. It was winter, and a storm was coming. He stopped in a village along the way, and the villagers tried to dissuade him from going further. The wind
picked up, and more snows were coming. They asked, “What makes you think you’ll even get there?” But the old man answered, “My heart is already there. It’s easy for the rest of me to follow.”
Are there obstacles in our lives? Are there problems we need to deal with? Are worries or fears or bad habits holding us back? Are we confused about what we should do in a particular situation? Are we struggling with what it means to love?
The question to ask is: Where is our heart? Have we placed our heart with the Lord? Do we recognize the love of God at the center of our lives? Are we seeking to respond to that love with love?
We must go to our center and let ourselves be loved there. That’s how we learn to love others. The first commandment will teach us the second commandment. Loving God with our heart, soul, mind, and strength will teach us to love our neighbor. In any given situation, that may be easy, or it may be tough. It may be delightful or sacrificial. In each case, though, it will be our hearts responding to love with love.
