Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.” But Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true child of Israel. There is no duplicity in him.” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

What are we to make of Bartholomew’s bravado? When he hears that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah, Bartholomew (traditionally identified with Nathanael) responds: “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” And Jesus, rather than taking offense, recognizes him as a “true child of Israel” with “no duplicity.” His honest outburst, rather than being rebuked, earns him a place among the Twelve.
Jesus’ own teachings are filled with a biting honesty. The entire Sermon on the Mount is an example of spiritual genius and cunning wisdom for surviving a cruel world. Duplicity played a part in all of this, as the poor were trapped in impossible debts, and Jesus is regularly tested by those with disingenuous intentions. In Bartholomew, perhaps Jesus saw an honesty that resonated with his own, or perhaps he simply remembered how his fellow Nazoreans once tried to hurl him headlong off a cliff.
In art, St. Bartholomew is often depicted holding his own flayed skin, a sign of his grisly martyrdom. In the Duomo in Milan, Marco d’Agrate’s St. Bartholomew Flayed is a brutal reminder of the cost of discipleship, as Bartholomew stands stoic and skeletal, his skin draped around him, with his muscles, veins, and tendons on display. Even unto death, there remained no duplicity in him.
In Bartholomew, Jesus found a disciple, an apostle, and a friend—one who would be true to him, even unto death.
