Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You lock the Kingdom of heaven before men. You do not
enter yourselves, nor do you allow entrance to those trying to enter.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You traverse sea and land to make one convert, and when that happens you make him a child of Gehenna twice as much as yourselves.
“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If one swears by the temple, it means nothing, but if one swears by the gold of the temple, one is obligated.’ Blind fools, which is greater, the gold, or the temple that made the gold sacred? And you say, ‘If one swears by the altar, it means nothing, but if one swears by the gift on the altar, one is obligated.’ You blind ones, which is greater, the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? One who swears by the altar swears by it and all that is upon it; one who swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it; one who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who is seated on it.”

We ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters, because your faith flourishes ever more.

Faith is a free, loving gift of God to human beings. Faith is the cradle of love and of hope. But this gift given to us at our baptism can grow, must grow, be incarnated into our lives, become part of us, become, like breathing, an utterly integral part of us.
How can faith become all these things? By prayer. God never refuses a prayer for deepening and growth in faith. Prayer is the food that will make faith grow, strengthen it, root it with deep and lasting roots into our hearts.
Faith also grows through living it out.
When I speak of faith, I mean a land of darkness. And, in a manner of speaking, a land of pain. For it is not easy to walk in darkness wondering about the abysses and crevices and pitfalls that might be wide open at our feet. In this year when one can almost hear the world cracking apart, it is not easy to walk in faith, in total belief in the Most Holy Trinity. But God will give us that faith if we continually pray for it.
Faith is received on our knees. This is the time when we ought to be prostrate before him, imploring, crying out for faith.
We don’t believe in the mystery of ourselves. And that leads us inevitably to lose part of our faith, or maybe all of it. Conversely, to believe in God is to believe in ourselves, for God is in us. When faith envelops us, the two mysteries meet—God and the human person. To love oneself means to live by faith.
