A fter Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a

severe fever, and they interceded with him about her. He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them.
At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them. And demons also came out from many, shouting, “You are the Son of God.” But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ.
At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them. But he said to them, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.” And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

“To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent” (Luke 4:43). This is the first mention of the reign or kingdom of God in Luke. Expulsion of the devil and curing of illnesses characterize the reign of God in us. Earlier, without using this term, Jesus had proclaimed in the synagogue at Nazareth that prophecies about Good News for the poor, release of captives, sight for the blind, and freedom for the oppressed were all fulfilled in him. Looking around our world at any given moment, we are likely to be discouraged about just such things. Oppression replaces oppression, the poor we always have with us, it seems, and there are always sick people present in the most disheartening ways. The Good News of the reign of God is both a message of hope and a spur to our faithfulness and generosity.
Through Jesus, God promises that every tear will be wiped away and that suffering and death will have an end. And the strong implication throughout the Gospel is that the good we do out of thankfulness for God’s love is a necessary element in the coming of the reign of God. The urgency in Jesus’

words—“To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news”—must resonate in us, his members, as we face each day. How can we, how do we announce and evidence the reign of God in what we say and do?
