The scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, “The disciples of John the Baptist fast often and offer prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same; but yours eat and drink.” Jesus answered them, “Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” And he also told them a parable. “No one tears a piece from a new cloak to patch an old one. Otherwise, he will tear the new and the piece from it will not match the old cloak. Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be ruined. Rather, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins. And no one who has been drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’ ”

Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?

As I walk along the shore, talking to myself, a pair of seals starts following my progress.
They poke up in the surf, dive, and poke up again further down, sleek and shiny and smooth, whiskery faces curious, intent. Eyes: bright black.
And once, as I shout and fling open my arms, caught up in my own argument, they pause, turn, and look right at each other. A whole beat. Bobbing.
I swear they’re thinking: Is he talking to us?
God is not to be “investigated,” St. Ephrem says, but “savored.” To understand Scripture, we have to stop “prying” into its mysteries and efface ourselves before the glory of it, reading with what he calls the “luminous eye” of imagination and faith.
What do we dream when we dream of opening a door or walking up a flight of stairs? What do we see with our luminous eye? “Rebuke your thought,” Ephrem writes. “Beware lest you depict in your mind something conjured up by your own intellect. . . . ”
“In this quest to seek and find God in all things,” Pope Francis said in his first interview as pope, “there is still an area of uncertainty:
there must be. If a person says that he met God with total certainty and is not touched by a margin of uncertainty, then this is not good. If one has the answers to all the questions—that is proof that God is not with him. It means that he is a false prophet using religion for himself. . . . You must leave room for the Lord, not for certainties. We must be humble.

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy.
