Mark 7:31-37

Ag ain Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by way of
Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the
Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had
a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on
him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He
put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his
tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said
to him, “Ephphatha!”—that is, “Be opened!”—And immediately
the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment
was removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not
to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the
more they proclaimed it. They were exceedingly astonished
and they said, “He has done all things well. He makes the
deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Mark’s Gospel depicts Jesus on the move: the urgency of Jesus’
mission is reflected in the quick pace and concise presentation.
Every detail matters. In today’s Gospel, Jesus heals a
man with a speech impediment who cannot hear. And he
does so in a gritty way—with fingers in ears, spit on the
tongue, and a deep sigh. Jesus looks up to heaven, a gesture
signifying that the healing is God’s action. Jesus does what
God does, as portrayed in the first reading from the prophet
Isaiah: healing those who cannot hear or speak.
The Gospel tells us not just who Jesus is but who we are
as Christians. The Baptismal Rite includes a prayer derived
from today’s Gospel. The minister of baptism touches the
child’s ears and mouth and says, “May the Lord Jesus . . .
grant that you may soon receive his word with your ears and
profess the faith with your lips, to the glory and praise of God
the Father.”
So how are we doing living that promise? Do we meditate
on God’s Word in the Scriptures? Do we listen attentively to the
person in front of us? Do we hear the cry of those on the margins?
Do we reverence the Gospel of creation? Or are we too
busy and unfocused, too plugged into our devices, too distracted
by regrets, worries, and self-doubts to really listen?
Are we speaking words of faith, hope, and love? Do we lift
up one another with our speech? Do we advocate for those
without a voice? Or do our words tear down others or divide
us into camps? Do we waste words with a curse or a lie, or a
joke at another’s expense?
Such details matter as we strive to give glory to God in all
we do and say.
