On a certain sabbath Jesus went into the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely to see if he would cure on the sabbath so that they might discover a reason to accuse him. But he realised their intentions and said to the man with the withered hand, “Come up and stand before us.” And he rose and stood there. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?” Looking around at them all, he then said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so and his hand was restored. But they became enraged and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.

I wonder what the man in the synagogue thought about the intrigue taking place as Jesus healed his withered limb. Given that it was his right hand—and likely his dominant one—the restoration to full functionality offered a new lease on life. Rather than rejoice with him, some of the scribes and Pharisees grumbled about the violation of a religious rule and used it to further accuse Jesus of wrongdoing. Adherence to the letter of the law blinded them to the miracle occurring right before their eyes.
The 1990s sitcom Dinosaurs aired a brilliant parody on the self-righteousness that often underscores conflict. It centered around a battle between the two-legged dinosaurs and the four-legged dinosaurs over the rights to pistachio trees. Newspaper reporters who wanted to cut down on the number of words shortened the name of the operation from “We Are
Right” to a convenient acronym: WAR. As the battle ensued, both sides ended up destroying all of the trees, thus leaving them without the food each side assumed they owned.
The healing of the man with the withered hand is one of six stories in Luke’s Gospel that prioritize right action over righteous views. Jesus opts in each one for compassion and caring over strict adherence to Sabbath laws. “I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?” Waging war over our need to be right is nothing new. How might we reframe such tendencies for our time so that being right never outweighs doing the right thing?
