16 'No one lights a lamp to cover it with a bowl or to put it under a bed. No, it is put on a lamp-stand so that people may see the light when they come in.

18 So take care how you listen; anyone who has, will be given more; anyone who has not, will be deprived even of what he thinks he has.'

Light from Light, Love from Love.

While the light in today's Gospel is the good news of God's all-encompassing, unconditional, and timeless love, do you wonder how that message becomes real for each of us? For me, this started with the Maryknoll Sisters who founded the school I attended from grades one to twelve. Sure, it was there that I got the basic tenets of the catechism, memorizing the answers for my Confirmation and First Communion exam in second grade. I could read aloud the exotic locations in the journeys of St. Paul (more a pronunciation drill than a biblical geography lesson). But I really learned about faith lived and celebrated through the sisters themselves.

God became real to me because God was real for them. I was bewildered by how they could leave behind a comfortable life in the United States in order to educate us, little Chinese girls with pigtails. One sister told me that she loved us before she ever met us, and she came specifically for us. I marveled at how the sisters faced bureaucratic obstacles and overcame challenges to open and maintain their schools, hospitals, and clinics. They clearly trusted that there would be no difficulties God could not overcome, and they believed 'can't' is an overused word.

Long before Pope Francis's The Joy of the Gospel, Sr. Mary Lou Teufel - who taught us geography and modeled justice -in-action outside the classroom - helped people pronounce her last name by offering, 'it rhymes with joyful.' Joyful: there is just no other way to be when we are in the arms of God.

To this day, we Maryknoll 'girls'have a bond of friendship that values and celebrates each other. We cherish in each other the kindness and compassion we instinctively knowthe sisters expected of us. Even though the majority of my classmates are not Catholic, there is a sense of the presence of a loving God because we are the products of the sisters who came in that love. Love begets love, and the love story of God unfolds in our midst.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.
