9 Jesus left that place, and as he walked along, he saw a tax collector, named Matthew, sitting in his office. He said to him, “Follow me.”
Matthew got up and followed him.

10 While Jesus was having a meal in Matthew's house, many tax collectors and other outcasts came and joined Jesus and his disciples at the table. 11 Some Pharisees saw this and asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with such people?”
12 Jesus heard them and answered, “People who are well do not need a doctor, but only those who are sick.

13 Go and find out what is meant by the scripture that says: ‘It is kindness that I want, not animal sacrifices.’ I have not come to call respectable people, but outcasts.”

This Work of Mercy.

Recently a good friend shared the story of a pastoral situation he faced back in the day when many Catholics would have been opposed to a mixed marriage. One of his parishioners had a long and satisfying marriage to a woman from another Christian church. He was a sometime churchgoer. He would help with the soup kitchen or contribute to funds for the homeless. But the big 'All Are Welcome' banner that hung in the parish gathering space provoked deep scepticism, even cynicism, in him. 'You say that, but you don't really mean it', he would comment.

When his beloved wife was stricken with an aggressive form of cancer, from diagnosis to death was a mere two months and he was devastated with grief. Filled with anguish he went to the pastor to ask if the funeral could be in the parish. The pastor did not hesitate: 'Of course'. The parish came together around him and his family in this sad time, and this work of mercy was transformative for all of them. Over the years the man became a faithful and active parish leader. His deep skepticism gave way to a hopeful confidence.

In the poignant scene of the call of Matthew, Jesus speaks the words that have burned their way into the imagination of the Christian community ever since: 'Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do'. It is this connection that led Pope Francis to liken the Church to a field hospital, that is, a Church that is always reaching out with healing and mercy to those who need it. This commitment is radical, it is risky, and it will often not be rewarded. But it is core to the Gospel -we cannot do otherwise.
