1 He called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases,

2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.

3 He said to them, 'Take nothing for the journey: neither staff, nor haversack, nor bread, nor money; and do not have a spare tunic.

4 Whatever house you enter, stay there; and when you leave let your departure be from there.

5 As for those who do not welcome you, when you leave their town shake the dust from your feet as evidence against them.'

6 So they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.

Right Away and Empty-Handed.

Life is most comfortable for me when it is well laid out, with little ambiguity. Once, when I was teaching, my colleagues invited me for an impromptu happy hour after school. I felt a bit of panic rise within and said, 'But I don't do right aways!'

This is not the way of Jesus, who sends his friends out on mission with just a few words of instruction. To top it off, the disciples are to take nothing with them. Nothing? (You should see the back of our car when my husband and I set out with our son for just one night at my parents' house!)

In this 'take nothing' approach to discipleship, Jesus asks us to trust: to truly rely on the hospitality of others and the ultimate providence of God. And perhaps not to get too comfortable where we find ourselves. We are not to set down roots too deeply or too firmly, lest we get too used to our surroundings and neglect the mission for which we have been made: to be the hands and feet and presence of Christ to all we encounter. This is often easier said than done.

As I pray with this Gospel, my husband and I are in the process of adopting our second child. We are staying open to what God might be asking of us and where this journey might lead, but we are guarding our hearts a little (okay, a lot). What if the birth mother decides not to place her daughter with us?

Even when rejection is a strong possibility, each of us must choose to bravely set out anyway, proclaiming the good news and bringing healing everywhere we can, open to the hospitality of others and with a great deal of trust in the God who sends us.

For us Jesus is the human face of God. In a privileged way we encounter him in the three special Marist places, where Jesus reveals God to us: At the Crib...At the Foot of the Cross...at the altar...

It is in these special Marist places that we not only encounter the love of Jesus, but also these are meeting places with the poor.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
