29 The crowds got even bigger and he addressed them, 'This is an evil generation; it is asking for a sign. The only sign it will be given is the sign of Jonah.

30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of man be a sign to this generation.

31 On Judgement Day the Queen of the South will stand up against the people of this generation and be their condemnation, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, look, there is something greater than Solomon here.

32 On Judgement Day the men of Nineveh will appear against this generation and be its condemnation, because when Jonah preached they repented; and, look, there is something greater than Jonah here.

A Love So Profound.

On this feast of St. Teresa of Avila, it seems providential that we hear St. Paul reflecting upon two women, each playing a central role in God’s covenant with Abraham. Sarah, we know, was Abraham’s freeborn wife, aged and barren. Through the generosity of God she became the mother of Isaac, an ancestor of the Messiah, Jesus. But it was Hagar, Sarah’s slave handmaiden, who was the mother of Abraham’s firstborn son, Ishmael. Each woman gave birth to a child who would reflect in different ways God’s promise to Abraham. As such, both Sarah and Hagar participated in the fulfillment of God’s covenant with Abraham. Each one traveled a difficult path to God’s will.

So, too, did Teresa of Avila. After years of “barren behavior,” reflected by her ignorance of God and lack of concern for God’s will, Teresa underwent a radical metanoia (conversion of heart). She was drawn into a love relationship with God so profound that she not only survived the Inquisition but also oversaw the reformation of the Carmelite Order.

Today, we reflect upon these three women who relied on God to save them: Sarah from her barrenness; Hagar from her enslavement and later exile; and Teresa from her unconverted heart. In Hagar, we see that God does deliver us from harm. In Sarah we see the promise of salvation. In Teresa we see the mystical life with God that was brought by the fulfillment of the promise of Salvation, Jesus Christ.

May we, too, recognize God’s will and open our hearts to the conversion God offers us in Christ. Amen!
