The crowds got even bigger, and Jesus addressed them:

‘This is a wicked generation; it is asking for a sign. The only sign it will be given is the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. On Judgement day the Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here. On Judgement day the men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation and condemn it, because when Jonah preached they repented; and there is something greater than Jonah here.’

Boundless Freedom.

One could do a lot worse than look to Paul for guidance. . . . Yes, he is contentious, impetuous, even wrong from time to time. And so am I. Blinded by the light on that dusty road, he had given up all claims to himself and was discovered by a boundless freedom. It was as if something snapped in Paul. He was opened to a core of truth about which there could be no compromise. His loyalty was to Truth, to the One he had witnessed.

He gave up meeting any internal or external expectations other than the dazzling truth of Christ and him crucified. In that moment he became the authentic Paul. Minus any accretions, he became fully himself and human in the most unpretentious way, and hence truly holy. There was little about Paul personally that would win converts. He was no guru or cult leader. He would never be known as Rev. Feel-Good. He consistently pointed away from himself to Christ Jesus.

The difficult task for the disciples and part of the thrust of Paul’s ministry was making the connection that the person of Jesus was the Christ. For some of today’s disciples, the task is making a similar connection that the Christ is Jesus.
