42 But alas for you Pharisees, because you pay your tithe of mint and rue and all sorts of garden herbs and neglect justice and the love of God! These you should have practised, without neglecting the others.

43 Alas for you Pharisees, because you like to take the seats of honour in the synagogues and to be greeted respectfully in the market squares!

44 Alas for you, because you are like the unmarked tombs that people walk on without knowing it!'

45 A lawyer then spoke up. 'Master,' he said, 'when you speak like this you insult us too.'

46 But he said, 'Alas for you lawyers as well, because you load on people burdens that are unendurable, burdens that you yourselves do not touch with your fingertips.

We bishops, popes, priests, nuns, Catholic educators—
we are human, and as humans we are sinful
and we need someone to be a prophet for us too
and call us to conversion
and not let us set up religion
as something untouchable.
Religion needs prophets, and thank God we have them,
because it would be a sad church
that felt itself owner of the truth
and rejected everything else.
A church that only condemns,
a church that sees sin only in others
and does not look at the beam in its own eye,
is not the authentic church of Christ.

The church, in its zeal to convert to the gospel, is seeing that its place is by the side of the poor, of the outraged, of the rejected, and that in their name it must speak and demand their rights.

But many persons belonging to the upper classes and feeling as if they owned the church think that the church is abandoning them and slipping away from its spiritual mission: it no longer preaches what is spiritual, it only preaches politics.

It’s not that. The church is pointing out sin, and society must listen to that accusation and be converted and so become what God wants.

St. Oscar Romero (1917–1980) became archbishop of San Salvador in 1977. A prophetic voice of the poor who was ultimately martyred at the altar while saying Mass, Romero was canonized on October 14, 2018.

Closing Prayer

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
