A man in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Master, tell my brother to give me a share of our inheritance.’ ‘My friend,’ he replied, ‘who appointed me your judge, or the arbitrator of your claims?’ Then he said to them, ‘Watch, and be on your guard against avarice of any kind, for a man’s life is not made secure by what he owns, even when he has more than he needs.’

Then he told them a parable: ‘There was once a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself, “What am I to do? I have not enough room to store my crops.” Then he said, “This is what I will do: I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain and my goods in them, and I will say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, have a good time.” But God said to him, “Fool! This very night the demand will be made for your soul; and this hoard of yours, whose will it be then?” So it is when a man stores up treasure for himself in place of making himself rich in the sight of God.’

When someone shouts, “tell my brother to share the inheritance with me,” Jesus does not tell his brother anything. Instead, he gets out of the personal and resolves the matter by warning all present to beware of greed!

Based on effort, productivity, and profit, our world orients us to gain and claim. If we make it, we’ve earned it, fair and square. Maybe not! Jesus reminds us that we do not store up our own riches separate from God. What we perceive as riches are not necessarily what God sees. The contradiction of what divine wealth is and where it comes from is essential to the Christian life. This is something many of us wrestle and pray with.

St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians offers us further insight. Told of the sins of our impulses and flesh, we are given a potent healing balm—Christ’s saving grace. Can we accept that Christ has saved us all, without exception? Unearned, it is pure gift, not something we can boast about, or acquire on our own. Do we accept that grace?

This is the crown jewel of the riches of God’s mercy. We can earn money, power, or fame, we can store up material riches, but in the end, the only thing we have is God’s boundless mercy. There is nothing we can buy with it and nowhere to store it. God’s wish is for us to live like Jesus, sharing the inheritance of his love with everyone we meet.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
