55 And when the wind is from the south you say it's going to be hot, and it is.

56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the face of the earth and the sky. How is it you do not know how to interpret these times?

57 'Why not judge for yourselves what is upright?

58 For example: when you are going to court with your opponent, make an effort to settle with him on the way, or he may drag you before the judge and the judge hand you over to the officer and the officer have you thrown into prison.

59 I tell you, you will not get out till you have paid the very last penny.'

Signs of Peace.

Is there anyone who does not long for peace? When I listen to children’s dreams, or to the intercessions during Mass or the lusty strains of a congregation reverberating with “Let There Be Peace on Earth,” it seems we all share the same longing for peace. One of the sisters in our convent who grew up in the 1920s told me how peaceful her childhood was, how comforting it was to know that the “war to end all wars” had been fought. By contrast, I was raised post–Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in the era when air-raid drills regularly sent us ducking for cover under our school desks as the Korean conflict raged and the threat of Communism grew ever stronger.

In our longing for peace, are we expecting some cataclysmic event that will eventually bring the world to its senses and peace will reign once and for all? Or will true peace remain ever-elusive until we know the endless peace of the world to come? In today’s readings St. Paul and the Lord Jesus have different responses to such questions. Jesus reminds the crowds to read the signs of the times, while St. Paul pleads with the Ephesians from prison about the daily-ness of peacemaking.

In 1989 when the Berlin Wall came tumbling down many saw that as the “sign of the times” that peace was possible and close at hand, but the optimism did not last nor did it translate into the daily need to live as Paul sketches out so passionately.

Yes, we urgently sing, “Let peace begin with me!” But it will only do so when we follow St. Paul’s simple program and daily conform our will to God’s.
