Luke 13: 1-9.

1 It was just about this time that some people arrived and told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with that of their sacrifices. At this he said to them,

2 'Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than any others, that this should have happened to them?

3 They were not, I tell you. No; but unless you repent you will all perish as they did.

4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower at Siloam fell, killing them all? Do you suppose that they were more guilty than all the other people living in Jerusalem?

5 They were not, I tell you. No; but unless you repent you will all perish as they did.'

6 He told this parable, 'A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it but found none.

7 He said to his vinedresser, "For three years now I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and finding none. Cut it down: why should it be taking up the ground?"

8 "Sir," the man replied, "leave it one more year and give me time to dig round it and manure it:

9 it may bear fruit next year; if not, then you can cut it down." '

Dance of Unity and Love.

St. Augustine and his medieval successors—drawing on the spirituality of St. Paul—saw individual Christians as members of the mystical body of Christ, united in the love of the Holy Spirit. In baptism, we descend into death with Christ and are raised up with him. We are filled with the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father and through the Son. The Spirit unites us to the Son, the head of the mystical body, who in turn offers us as part of his own self-offering to the Father. This dance of unity and offering is symbolized and enacted during every celebration of the Eucharist.

The Holy Spirit also gives to individual believers particular gifts, which we should use to build up the rest of the body of Christ. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul draws up an extensive list of spiritual gifts, showing how those gifts should be used for the flourishing of all. He concludes with his famous hymn of love: “If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal” (1 Cor 13:1). Paul does something similar in today’s reading.

Hence, he instructs us to examine our spiritual gifts and reminds us to use them “living the truth in love.” For without truth, love is false, and without love, the truth is in vain. But together, they allow us to bring about the growth of the body of Christ and, by God’s grace, to build it up in love.

All Loving God

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
