Mark 10: 46 - 52.

46 They reached Jericho; and as he left Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus -- that is, the son of Timaeus -- a blind beggar, was sitting at the side of the road.

47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout and cry out, 'Son of David, Jesus, have pity on me.'

48 And many of them scolded him and told him to keep quiet, but he only shouted all the louder, 'Son of David, have pity on me.'

49 Jesus stopped and said, 'Call him here.' So they called the blind man over. 'Courage,' they said, 'get up; he is calling you.'

50 So throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and went to Jesus.

51 Then Jesus spoke, 'What do you want me to do for you?' The blind man said to him, 'Rabbuni, let me see again.'

52 Jesus said to him, 'Go; your faith has saved you.' And at once his sight returned and he followed him along the road.

A Great Portal to Healing.

Jesus does not make assumptions about what the blind man needs or wants. He does not immediately move to heal his blindness but instead asks him, "What do you want me to do for you?” He is asking him, What is your deepest desire right now? He yields to Bartimaeus’s inner sovereignty, his ability to ask for what he needs rather than anticipating what that might be. The blind man chooses sight, and Jesus’ reply is, “Your faith has made you well.” The power of healing was within him already and was not reliant on external authority.

If Jesus is an image of our inner witness, or symbolic of our own True Self, then he is the one who empowers all the parts of us to ask for what we need.

This Gospel story invites me to become more aware of my own inner multitude, to welcome the voices of need from the fringes of my being, and to not let the harshness of my inner critic silence this deep cry for healing. It is with this process that I make the long, slow journey toward wholeness.

It is in welcoming what is most tender and uncomfortable within us that we encounter the Divine presence. Might this invitation to inner hospitality be a great portal to healing the world from within? In welcoming all of the voices inside of us, we bring more compassion and resources to the world around us. We remember our own vulnerability, and so deal with others with more tenderness and understanding.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
