10 One Sabbath day he was teaching in one of the synagogues,

11 and there before him was a woman who for eighteen years had been possessed by a spirit that crippled her; she was bent double and quite unable to stand upright.

12 When Jesus saw her he called her over and said, 'Woman, you are freed from your disability,'

13 and he laid his hands on her. And at once she straightened up, and she glorified God.

14 But the president of the synagogue was indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, and he addressed all those present saying, 'There are six days when work is to be done. Come and be healed on one of those days and not on the Sabbath.'

15 But the Lord answered him and said, 'Hypocrites! Is there one of you who does not untie his ox or his donkey from the manger on the Sabbath and take it out for watering?

16 And this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan has held bound these eighteen years -- was it not right to untie this bond on the Sabbath day?'

17 When he said this, all his adversaries were covered with confusion, and all the people were overjoyed at all the wonders he worked.

A Keen and Practical Edge.

Never cautious or tentative in the counsel he offers, St. Paul certainly cuts to the chase here, calling us to be imitators of God. Consider the almost preposterous enormity of that statement and its implications for our daily lives: to imitate God. But wait—there’s more! When you’re at the coffee station at work, or in the cafeteria at school, or at the kitchen table, take care that immorality or impurity or greed not even be mentioned. Let no rude or silly or suggestive talk pepper your conversation and humor. (Imagine pinning Paul’s warning on the bulletin board at work or on the refrigerator in your kitchen.)

Not yet convinced? How about this one-two punch? The immoral, impure, or greedy person will find no place in heaven. And why not? Because such as these are guilty of idolatry: they fail to imitate God. Beware, then, of being seduced and deceived by such empty conversations.

Before we dismiss Paul as overly pious or demanding beyond reason, see the keen and practical edge he puts on what he asks of us. Can we possibly imitate God? It’s not beyond our grasp. Rather than excusing careless words as the result of our harried, hurried lives, we need to be kind to one another. Rather than holding grudges, we need to forgive one another as we’ve been forgiven in Christ. And in place of idle and silly chatter, we need to anoint our conversations with the fragrant aroma of gratitude.

When we imitate God we come out of the shadows, children aglow with God’s own light.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.
