Luke 6:12-19

Jesus went out into the hills to pray; and he spent the whole night in prayer to God. When day came he summoned his disciples and picked out twelve of them; he called them ‘apostles’: Simon whom he called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor.

He then came down with them and stopped at a piece of level ground where there was a large gathering of his disciples with a great crowd of people from all parts of Judaea and from Jerusalem and from the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon who had come to hear him and to be cured of their diseases. People tormented by unclean spirits were also cured, and everyone in the crowd was trying to touch him because power came out of him that cured them all.

Today we hear about a call within a call—first, to be a disciple, second, the choosing of the Twelve from among the disciples. Whether we think of the first call or the second, what does being called and chosen mean?

This call is ultimately God’s self-offer to us, seeking our partnership and enabling our self-offer to God in return. As disciples, then, we live the discipline of the self-offering love of God who loves us first. What follows? First, the call decenters the ego, if we embrace it with a pure heart. We die to self-seeking and give ourselves to God’s dream for humankind. Second, to be a disciple is inherently communal. We are “no longer strangers” but “members of the household of God.” It is a matter of being with and for others. With is just as important as for. Love requires reciprocity and mutual respect.

Finally, today’s passage illustrates two possibilities—living one’s call faithfully, despite failures and struggles, and chillingly, betrayal. When are we tempted to enter betrayal territory? It is when we live our call as a personal possession granting status rather than a continual dispossession of the self in service to God and others. Being chosen necessarily and importantly involves having a position with specific duties.

At its heart, though, it is not about having a position but of “being a mystery,” as Archbishop Suhard of Paris once said, the mystery of which Paul wrote: “It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me.”
