Luke 14: 1 - 6

1 One Sabbath Jesus went to eat a meal at the home of one of the leading Pharisees; and people were watching Jesus closely.
2 A man whose legs and arms were swollen came to Jesus, 3 and Jesus asked the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, “Does our Law allow healing on the Sabbath or not?”

4 But they would not say anything. Jesus took the man, healed him, and sent him away. 5 Then he said to them, “If any one of you had a son or an ox that happened to fall in a well on a Sabbath, would you not pull them out at once on the Sabbath itself?”

6 But they were not able to answer him about this.

Today's Gospel is another powerful reminder of the difference in approach between Jesus and the authorities of His day. In this, it is emblematic of this difference in any day. On the one hand, we have these self-important people whose main preoccupation seemed to be with their own image and how they could be perceived. Were they in keeping with the Law?

By contrast, Jesus dives right in and heals the man who desires healing. He, at least, is able to put things into perspective - doing what is right and necessary is more important than getting caught up in legalism.

The lesson for us? When we focus on ourselves, or become overly concerned with what others think, or are too conscious of following the fads of the day, we fail to be our most authentic and best selves. When we focus instead on life-giving, love-giving choices - doing God's will, in other words - we transcend the petty and enter into our greatness.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.
