Luke 14: 1, 7-11.

1 Now it happened that on a Sabbath day he had gone to share a meal in the house of one of the leading Pharisees; and they watched him closely.

7 He then told the guests a parable, because he had noticed how they picked the places of honour. He said this,

8 'When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take your seat in the place of honour. A more distinguished person than you may have been invited,

9 and the person who invited you both may come and say, "Give up your place to this man." And then, to your embarrassment, you will have to go and take the lowest place.

10 No; when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there, so that, when your host comes, he may say, "My friend, move up higher." Then, everyone with you at the table will see you honoured.

11 For everyone who raises himself up will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be raised up.'

It’s Holy to Be Humbled.

Today’s parable actually happened to me once. My husband Ben and I arrived at a wedding reception earlier than everyone else. We set our gift on the table next to the cake, randomly chose two chairs, and sat down. Sure enough, when the wedding party arrived they headed straight for our table. We were actually sitting in the chairs reserved for the bride and groom!

I’ll never forget the moment of sheer humiliation when I realized the couple was hovering around us not because they wanted to talk with us more than their other guests but because they were waiting for us to move! Just recalling it now makes me blush.

After we speedily retreated to the last table in the room, we both said, “Can you believe that happened? We walked right into Jesus’ wedding banquet parable!”

We don’t like the message of humbling ourselves, of course. It’s not good for our self-esteem. But not to worry. Bidden or unbidden, opportunities for falling on our face are right around the corner. It’s a holy thing to be humbled. It’s a relief to be found out, to have a light shone on our bumbling, silly selves.

Of course we didn’t mean to sit with the bridal party. We somehow ended up there anyway. That’s okay. Jesus the Bridegroom has chosen us—sinful and sorrowful as we are—as his Bride. That’s the best place at any table.

All Loving God
