28 One of the scribes who had listened to them debating appreciated that Jesus had given a good answer and put a further question to him, 'Which is the first of all the commandments?'

29 Jesus replied, 'This is the first: Listen, Israel, the Lord our God is the one, only Lord,

30 and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength.

31 The second is this: You must love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.'

32 The scribe said to him, 'Well spoken, Master; what you have said is true, that he is one and there is no other.

33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself, this is far more important than any burnt offering or sacrifice.'

The Double Commandment.

“Hear O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone!” This key passage in today’s reading from Deuteronomy is known as the Shema. It was prayed by practicing Jews three times a day. The commandment to love one’s neighbor is taken from the book of Leviticus (19:18). Both commandments would have been well known to faithful Jews of the time.

What is distinctive in Jesus’ teaching is the linkage of these two commandments, insisting that love of God and love of neighbor are, as it were, two sides of the same coin. The inseparability of the two commandments is found elsewhere, achieving its most profound form in the Johannine tradition, where we are told “anyone who says ‘I love God’ but hates his brother is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen” (1 John 4:20).

It is easy to miss the radical character of this double commandment. What we encounter here is not merely a moral imperative: if one loves God one ought to love one’s neighbor. No, here Jesus makes a more basic claim: one cannot love God and not love one’s neighbor, since the love of God is realized, in large part, precisely in one’s love of neighbor. This double commandment binds together the life of worship and our daily conduct toward others, and it shines a harsh light on any false piety divorced from our care for others.
